The National... am I the only one?

Am I the only one who thinks National are a poor imitation of the Tindersticks. Even right down to the whole stage presence. Every song they played reminded me of a Tinders song somewhere in there and the lead singer was clearly doing his damnedest to look like Stuart Staples. I don't mind people being influenced by someone else but really. Ugh!

Having seen both bands many times over the year--the Tindersticks only 4 weeks ago-i think the Tindersticks are more soul/orchestrated while The National are a more jerky/indie-i think they have a similar almost part talking instead of singing style but do sound different.
This is the third thread you've placed this on--it seems to have really got under your skin.

Yeah you're right. I've been a Tinderstick fan for years and seen them many times. I think they have done something really unique during their career. I hate to see that ripped by a flavour-of-the-month band with a shortage of original ideas.

Speaking of 'The Tindersticks' - I can hold my peace no longer.
The National's singing bloke does indeed sing in a low key - but the similarities kind of end there.
I saw The Tindersticks playing live with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds way back when - at the time they had 'borrowed' entire riffs and chord sequences from both the Bad Seeds back catalogue AND the Birthday Party's. You couldn't help but feel a little embarrased for them. He even sang in a similar way to St.Nick.
I would say that 'The Nationals' similarities to 'The Tindersticks' are far less comparable than 'The Tindersticks' similarities to much of 'The Bad Seeds' / 'Birthday Party's' back catalogue.
My point is - EVERYTHING is derivitive of something... even 'The Tindersticks'.
The National were a great live band and they have a bunch of fine songs - 'Boxer' was indeed one of the finest albums of last year (and 'aligator' before that).
Oh and the next person that says they sound like Interpol is going to send me into a mental spin!
Great festival by the way ... looking forward to next year.
Much love xxx

Oh, and just to be clear...

Just to be clear ... I actually like 'The Tindersticks' - I'm not knocking them one tiny bit.
As for the 'flavour-of-the-month' comment.
I wouldn't really call two consecutive critically aclaimed albums and an extensive back catalogue a 'flash-in-the-pan' would you?
We're not really talking 'McFly' here are we? (Although 'McFly' could probably be considered old hands now - their longevity has been huge!)
Huh, what next!
I suppose someones going to tell me that 'War on Drugs' sound like Bob Dylan?!!?
oh ... bugger.

The similarities btx these bands goes way beyond the lead singers singing in a similarly low key - as I tried to make clear in my first post.
As for the St (?!!) Nick comments... oh, please!

Well, if you want to waste good time making lazy comparisons that's kind of up to you.
And what do you mean 'oh please' - are you suggesting for a moment that Nick Cave isn't somehow blessed from on high?
Dear oh dear - what is the world coming to!?!
We could argue about this until the cows (literally) came home - it's a silly argument (which is the point I was trying to make ... badly it would seem).
Obviously this IS important to you - so I will conceed - The National DO sound just like The Tindersticks...
happier now?
