Agree, the wasps were a real pest, our friends kiddy got stung by one this year and refused to come out of his tent again for the whole of the festival !!
Went to electric picnic festival in Eire a few years ago (never went again it was awful :-), and the wasps there were even worse then at Glanusk this year, they were REALLY nasty !
Do wasps serve any purpose ? - we we're discussing this, they don't polinate (as far as we knew), all they do is sting people, a candidate for the elimination of a species perhaps :-)

I think they are all waiting each year for us to return and bring out the cider! They seemed incredibly attracted to it....
Wasps are very essential for pollination. They may not be as furry as bees so much less pollen gets attached to them during the process but nevertheless they play a very important role, especially when we consider the looming bee crisis.
Shame it hurts like a bitch when they sting - OUCH! x

Cheers for the wasp knowledge, I didn't realise that, I find blowing on them really hard seems to make them go away and its a better alternative to batting them with a newspaper (from the wasps perspective !)
Maybe its the bee crisis that is leading to the increased number of wasps ?
If it is then we'd better protect the wasps or we'll be going hungry !

I think they're attracted by the ridiculous amount of stuff that people bring to festivals these days, including flamin gazebo's ;)
Bring back the days when people just turned up to festivals with a ragged A-frame tent and enough cider to sink the Titantic.
