4 out of 5 stars in the Guardian
Aug 19, 2008, 18:54
I have a brilliant weekend although I am still recovering from the "tricky" cider.

Heard some great music, ate great food and drank toooooo much.

Read this in the Guardian today..

Saw this in Virtual Festivals

The more I think about it the more I am bowled over that in spite the weather it was such a great festival.

Big respect to the organisers.

I went to the car park to pick up some stuff from my car on Sunday and spoke to the car park crew. They said that at any other festival in the wet conditions people would have left but only 15 people had gone.

It says a great deal about how green man is run and who comes that so few left.

I agree. One think I didn't see was people actually moaning, or saying "I can't take it anymore" or even leaving. On Monday morning the campsite was pretty much as it was on Saturday, same number of tents around me. So, yes, people stayed because it is a fantastic festival. A lot could be done still to mitigate the effects of the rain, but it's an amazing event.

To be honest with you I am not sure more could have been done.

Having gone to Leeds, Reading and Glastonbury and been treated with a complete lack of respect and experienced a complete lack of organisation when it rained I disagree.

The weather was worse than last year and what can you do. Its not like they have the kind of money that other events do.

I have looked at some of the postings on this website and can not understand the negativity.

There are a lot of things which are incredible about the green man and one of those is how it is able to offer the high level of services and production while still being unsponsored and non-corporate.

I have not seen any where near the standard I see at Green Man at any other festival corporate or not.

Well, I was one of the people who had to leave the festival, after heavy rains on Saturday afternoon led our tent to leak all over our beds. At that point there was no choice but to pack up. this meant we missed over HALF of the festival due to the weather conditions. We were both very, very depressed over this. And to be honest, I think more than 15 people left the festival due to rains! On our way out we saw many others packing out their stuff. So please none of this macho stuff here, it was the only option for some people!! and very sad. Perhaps (maybe this is unreasonable) the organisers can provide a refund if we have to miss a full day due to weather?

My tent leaked too but I mopped it up and got on with it.

There were no floods at the festival like I experienced at the Glade last year. It was just wet.

It was disappointing but I wouldn't expect a refund for going to a Welsh festival if it rained?

I really enjoyed it and don't think of myself as being macho at all for staying.

I appreciate everything about GM, especially the fact that it exists! It's a wonderful festival that put a smile on my face for more than a week last year. So congratulations to all the people involved, GM rules!

But, and I don't want to be repetitive here, yes, more could have been done. The thing is: we all know how to cope with rain, we just cover ourselves, it is the mud that bothers us mostly. And, in order to have less mud, a festival like Green Man should make people walk less. The more we walk, the worse the terrain gets. So having the two main stages close by is a way of preventing part of the mud bath.

Sometimes it was impossible to cross the GM cafe because there was a bottle neck there, and that was because it was the main route towards the camp fire and the FD stage. Having the FD stage where it was last year would make less people walk through that route, which would mean less mud. And, again, so we would walk less: put a bar in every single stage! The FD stage is very large, people want to have a drink, especially in a dreadful weather to forget about it, and had to walk up to the camp fire to get one. Walking more in the mud makes people more annoyed and, yes, it makes the terrain even muddier!

So, yes, I think a better planning of the site would have made conditions a bit better. Congratulations for keeping up with GM though, despite the mad, mad weather. See you next year.
